18. Monthly Competition Terms and Conditions

​

These competition terms apply to monthly competitions run by The Dorset Puzzler, including crossword, sudoku, number challenge and other puzzle competitions.

18.2 Competition format

​

Each competition will relate to a puzzle, clue, answer, challenge or activity published by The Dorset Puzzler online, in print, or both.

​

To enter, entrants must follow the instructions on the relevant competition page and submit the required answer using the online entry form.

​

18.3 No purchase necessary

​

No purchase is necessary to enter, unless expressly stated otherwise on the relevant competition page.

​

Entrants are responsible for any normal internet, mobile data or other standard access costs charged by their provider.

​

18.4 Eligibility

​

Unless stated otherwise on the relevant competition page, competitions are open to UK residents aged 18 or over.

​

Employees, contractors, contributors, suppliers, advertisers, professional advisers or anyone professionally connected with The Dorset Puzzler, including their immediate family members, may not enter.

​

We reserve the right to ask for proof of age, identity, UK residency and eligibility before awarding a prize.

​

18.5 How to enter

​

To enter a competition, you must:

  1. Complete the relevant puzzle or challenge.

  2. Visit the relevant competition page on thepuzzler.org.

  3. Submit your answer using the online entry form.

  4. Provide the requested contact details.

  5. Submit your entry before the stated closing date and time.

​

Entries submitted after the closing date will not be included.

​

Incomplete, incorrect, duplicated, automated, bulk, fraudulent, altered, offensive or otherwise invalid entries may be disqualified.

​

18.6 Entry limit

​

Unless stated otherwise, only one entry is permitted per person per monthly competition.

Multiple entries from the same person may be disqualified.

​

We may also disqualify entries where we reasonably believe a person has attempted to enter more than once using different names, email addresses, accounts, devices or other methods.

​

18.7 Specific competition details

​

Each competition page should state:

​

  • the name of the competition;

  • the relevant issue or puzzle;

  • the prize;

  • the opening date, if applicable;

  • the closing date and time;

  • who can enter;

  • how to enter;

  • the entry limit;

  • when the winner will be selected;

  • when the winner will be contacted;

  • any specific restrictions or conditions.

For the Monthly Dorset Crossword Competition, the specific details are:

Entry method: Submit the correct crossword answer using the online form on the competition page
Closing date: 11:59pm on 22nd of each month
Winner selection date: 23rd of each month
Winner contact date: 23rd of each month

No purchase necessary

18.8 Prize

​

The prize for each competition will be shown on the relevant competition page.

​

For the Monthly Dorset Crossword Competition, there will be one winner and the prize will be a £50 gift card.

​

The prize is non-transferable and no cash alternative will be offered.

​

We reserve the right to substitute the prize with another prize of equal or greater value if the advertised prize becomes unavailable for reasons outside our reasonable control.

​

18.9 Gift card terms

​

Gift cards may be subject to the issuer’s own terms and conditions, including expiry dates, redemption rules, spending restrictions, exclusions and availability.

​

The Dorset Puzzler is not responsible for the terms, availability, operation, redemption or acceptance of a third-party gift card once it has been issued.

​

18.10 Winner selection

​

Unless stated otherwise on the relevant competition page, the winner will be selected at random from all valid entries that contain the correct answer.

​

The random draw will be carried out using a fair random selection process. We may use a random computer process or another fair method.

​

We may keep a record of the draw for verification purposes.

​

The decision of The Dorset Puzzler is final and no correspondence will be entered into, except where required by law or regulation.

​

18.11 Winner contact

​

The winner will be contacted using the contact details provided on the entry form.

​

For the Monthly Dorset Crossword Competition, the winner will be contacted on 23rd of each month. 

​

If the winner does not respond within 7 days of being contacted, or if the winner is found to be ineligible, we reserve the right to select another winner from the remaining valid entries.

Entrants are responsible for ensuring that the contact details they provide are accurate and up to date.

​

18.12 Prize delivery

​

We aim to deliver or arrange the prize within 30 days of the winner confirming their details, unless stated otherwise on the relevant competition page.

​

The prize may be sent electronically or by post, depending on the type of gift card or prize selected.

​

We are not responsible for delays caused by incorrect contact details, postal issues, email filtering, third-party gift card providers, technical problems or circumstances outside our reasonable control.

​

18.13 Winner announcement

​

We may announce the winner on thepuzzler.org, in The Dorset Puzzler, by email, or on our social media pages.

​

Unless the winner agrees otherwise, we will only publish limited winner information, such as first name and county.

​

We may be required to make winner information available to demonstrate that a valid award took place. Entrants may object to their details being published or request that the amount of information published is reduced, but we may still need to provide information to a regulator if required.

​

18.14 Personal data and competitions

​

Personal data submitted as part of a competition will be used to:

​

  • administer the competition;

  • check entries;

  • contact the winner;

  • verify eligibility;

  • arrange delivery of the prize;

  • keep records of the competition;

  • comply with legal or regulatory requirements.

Entrants’ personal data will not be used for marketing unless the entrant has separately opted in to receive marketing communications.

Any optional marketing consent will be separate from competition entry and can be withdrawn at any time.

18.15 Marketing consent

Entering a competition does not automatically sign you up to marketing.

18.16 Technical issues

We are not responsible for entries that are lost, delayed, incomplete, misdirected, corrupted, undelivered or not received due to technical problems, website issues, internet issues, server issues, email issues, form errors, device issues, spam filtering or any other reason outside our reasonable control.

​

Proof of submission is not proof of receipt.

18.17 Fairness and disqualification

We reserve the right to disqualify any entrant or entry if we reasonably believe that:

​

  • the entry is fraudulent, automated or submitted in bulk;

  • the entrant has breached these terms;

  • the entrant has provided false or misleading information;

  • the entrant has attempted to manipulate the competition;

  • the entrant has used multiple identities, accounts or email addresses;

  • the entry is inappropriate, offensive or unlawful;

  • accepting the entry would be unfair to other entrants.

18.18 Errors, amendments and cancellation

​

If a competition is affected by an error, printing issue, website issue, technical problem, fraud, unauthorised intervention, administrative issue or any event outside our reasonable control, we may amend, suspend, cancel, extend or re-run the competition where it is reasonable and fair to do so.

​

We will try to avoid changing competition terms once a competition has opened, unless necessary to protect entrants, correct an error, comply with the law, preserve fairness, or respond to circumstances outside our reasonable control.

18.19 Responsibility for prizes

​

We are responsible for making reasonable efforts to award the prize as described.

However, we are not responsible for:

​

  • a winner providing incorrect contact details;

  • a winner failing to respond within the stated timeframe;

  • a prize being delayed due to a third-party provider;

  • a gift card provider changing its terms, expiry period or redemption rules;

  • a prize being lost or delayed due to circumstances outside our reasonable control.

18.20 Liability for competitions

​

The Dorset Puzzler is not responsible for any loss, damage, injury or disappointment suffered as a result of entering a competition, being unable to enter, not winning, accepting a prize, or using a prize, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.

 

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot legally be excluded.

18.21 Agreement to competition terms

By entering a competition, you agree to be bound by these competition terms and any specific terms shown on the relevant competition page.

​

If there is any conflict between these general competition terms and the specific details on a competition page, the specific competition page details will apply to that competition.

19. Governing law

These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

​

Any disputes will be subject to the courts of England and Wales, unless applicable consumer law gives you the right to bring proceedings elsewhere.
